Man jailed for horrifying attack

Monday, April 29, 2024

A man has been jailed after biting a man’s ear off in a horrific attack.

On 26th October last year Steven Paterson assaulted his victim so badly that it left him fighting for his life. During the attack, Paterson even bit his victim’s ear off. Our officers were called to Bolton Road, Darwen, at 12.35pm to reports a man had been assaulted inside a flat.

Our officers attended and found a man in his 50s unresponsive. Such was the severity of the man’s injuries, which included a collapsed lung and a bleed on the brain, that it was initially feared he may die. The victim was taken to hospital where he required a number of surgical interventions.

Paterson was arrested at the scene and later charged.

Paterson, 35, of Cavendish Street, Darwen, appeared in the dock at Preston Crown Court earlier this year and pleaded guilty to Section 18 Wounding.

He appeared back in the dock today (29th April) and was jailed for nine years and five months with an extended licence of five years.

Tony Roberts, of Blackburn CID, said: “This was a sickening and callous attack which has left Paterson’s victim with life-threatening injuries. Nothing can justify the ferocious violence used in the attack, which included the victim losing part of his ears.

“I welcome the significant sentence handed down to Paterson which reflects the very real danger he presents to the public.”
